Museum quality, acrylic sculptures will last a long time, providing that they are cared for properly. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to care for them and they end up permanently marring the pedestals’ beauty in the process. So to prevent those disastrous situations from occurring, our acrylic experts wanted to break down the basics:
- Don’t apply household cleansers that contain harsh chemicals, acids, dyes or abrasives to acrylic sculptures. Otherwise, the pedestals may end up severely discolored and scratched. Instead, choose to use mild, water-based detergents and regular tap water or proprietary, acrylic cleaners instead. Examples of chemicals to avoid are carbon tetrachlorine, vinegar, ammonia, acetone, bleach, citrus acid and rubbing alcohol.
- On top of that, resist the urge to use scouring sponges or rags. The sponges could accidentally rough up the pedestals’ surfaces and the rags could leave lint behind. With that in mind, we recommend using a lint-free chamois like the kind normally used to clean computer monitors, HD television screens and prescription eyeglasses.
- If scratches, chips or dings appear in the acrylic sculpture’s surface, consider having them looked at by a professional. Depending on how big and deep the flaws are, an expert crafts-person may be able to fill, grind or buff them out with specialized products. In other situations, it may be possible to purchase over-the-counter restoration kits that are suitable for DIY use.
- After many years of use, some lesser grade, acrylic blends will often develop a yellow hue. It may be possible to remove that using mild abrasives or a hydrogen peroxide soak. Pure, museum quality acrylics rarely discolor due to age. However, they will most certainly develop an ugly hue if they are not cleaned and maintained properly on a regular basis.
